There are various cleansers called “surfactants” used in shampoo. Besides, among the most common substances used are sodium or ammonium laureth sulfate, sodium or ammonium lauryl sulfate, and TEA-lauryl sulfate. Sodium lauryl sulfate and TEA-lauryl sulfate have a tendency to be harsh and can irritate a sensitive scalp.
Except clarifying shampoos, most shampoos contain some conditioning agents such as humectants, silicone and protein. These stay on your hair until the next time you wash it although they are in much lower amounts than in conditioner.

Ammonium lauryl sulfate is just as harsh as SLS and TEA-lauryl sulfate. In water, these ingredients are pretty much the same. For a less harsh formula try to find a surfactant like PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate or Cocamidopropyl Betaine.
